Over the last few days, the weekend basically, I’ve been reading the papers, (something I love to do at the weekends as I don’t get much of a chance during the week).  But anyway, as I was reading through a few articles it suddenly struck me that the last couple of weeks, since just before the transfer deadline, have been a pretty amazing time in the life of the English Premier League and English football/soccer.  So I thought I would just recap over what has gone on exactly in that time, because when you see it all laid out in front of you, it’s quite something!

Ok, let’s head back to:

Sunday August 31st

On that day, Robinho was still a Real Madrid player and he was quoted as saying the following:

“I am only thinking of Chelsea and want to play there.”

Ok, so that’s pretty straight forward and clear then, no chance of getting that short statement confused. Hmm!

Monday September 1st

So here’s me talking about 2 weeks being a long time in football, ain’t nothing compared to one day obviously.  In less than 24 hours of coming out with that quote about Chelsea, the Abu Dhabi United Group, who make Roman Abramovich look like he should join the nearest Soup Line, swoop in and agree to buy Manchester City from a former Thai Prime Minister who was basically on the run in the UK from his homeland who were after him on corruption charges.  Make all this up?  You couldn’t!

The Abu Dhabi Group waste no time in immediately waving cheques around in front of some of the best clubs and players in Europe, filled out with telephone numbers for amounts.  And no, they weren’t wrong figures.

However, the sulky Bulgarian, Dimitar “I don’t want to play anymore for you” Berbatov obviously isn’t taken in and doesn’t succumb to the lure of the oil dollar and joins Manchester United with minutes to spare before the bewitching hour of the transfer deadline struck and he was turned into a pumpkin.  Of course we will never know what went on behind those closed doors that made Daniel Levy the Spurs Chairman change his mind and drop the charges he was going to make to the Premier League up until those final few minutes.  But I think we can all have a pretty good educated guess.

Meanwhile across town, the real “coup de gras” was taking place.  Robinho gets his geography mixed up and agrees to sign for Man City instead of Chelsea less than 24 hours after coming up with the above quote.  Although I suspect money may have had something to do with it.  Either that or he just heard Manchester, didn’t realise there were actually two teams that play in the city and he made one hell of a mistake.  Which might explain the confused look on his face when Mark Hughes handed him that light blue shirt, not a red one, in that hotel reception, or whatever the hell it was.

Apparently the deal, a British record at £34.2m (approx $60m) only started at 7pm on that transfer deadline evening.  Money sure does talk quickly!

Tuesday September 2nd

Totally out of the blue, at least it seemed to be to everyone outside of the Newcastle Boardroom, Kevin Keegan, the undisputed God of Tyneside, tells the Board that unless his limited involvement in the club’s transfer policy changes he will resign, again!  Or is that resign for the first time and he was sacked the other time?   I can’t remember that far back, remembering everything that’s gone on in the last 2 weeks is bad enough!  The Newcastle Board apparently spend the rest of the day trying to persuade Keegan to change his mind.

 Powered by Max Banner Ads

On the same day, the leader, frontman or whatever you want to call him, of the Abu Dhabi Group Dr. Sulaiman al-Fahim, stated they were prepared to offer their new arch rivals, Man Utd, £135m (approx $238m) for Cristiano Ronaldo when the transfer window opens back up in January.  He states the reason is “because we are going to be the biggest club in the world!”  They obviously have a keen sense of humour in Abu Dhabi.  Bet the comedy club scene is a riot.

Wednesday September 3rd

Trouble down the East End of London rears it’s ugly head as Alan Curbishley resigns as the West Ham manager because of apparent interference in transfer dealings.  In other words, he wasn’t interfering in them at all!  I seem to remember this coming right out of the blue, or was it because I was so shell shocked with everything else that was going on?  Who knows, who cares?

Whilst all that was going on Keegan was apparently still having talks with the Newcastle Board and Mike Ashley.  I presume those talks involved Denis Wise.  Would you have liked to have been a fly on the wall in that meeting?

Thursday September 4th

King Kev decides he’s had enough, again, and Newcastle goes into mourning, again.  Keegan was quoted as saying, “A manager must have the right to manage and a club should not impose on any manager any player that he doesn’t want.”  Well, call me old fashioned, but that kind of sums it all up really.  At least it does for me!

Friday September 5th

Fortunately this was like a little day of rest.  Not a lot went on apart from having to look at endless views from outside St James’ Park as that Sky reporter tried to think of what else he could say, to make up for the fact he had to keep repeating himself, hardly a first for Sky.  So John Terry thought he’d better say something before the England game against Andorra by stating England players play with “a fear of failure”.  Good motivational speech John! Way to go!

Saturday September 6th

Terry’s “rah rah” speech obviously does the trick as England go on the rampage against the mighty Andorra winning 2 - 0.  Apologies for the slight hint of sarcasm.  Actually, no I’m not sorry!

Sunday September 7th

News comes out of Eastlands that City’s new (and let’s clarify, prospective) owners plan to tap into transport, financial services and food industries around the world by establishing CityCars, CityCards & restaurants named, wait for it, City Eating.  And NO, I’m not making this up!

Monday September 8th

Another bolt from the blue (excuse the pun) as the former diminutive Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola is actually named as a front runner to take over from Curbishley at West Ham.

Meanwhile back in Toon Town the Newcastle supporters plan to boycott the club’s merchandising and sports retail empire belonging to the owner Mike Ashley, who at this point must be so pleased he’s splashed out £250m (approx $440m) of his own money in just over a year on the club.

Tuesday September 9th

Fabio Capello, the England manager states he prefers his players to play away from home (I just hope he was talking about the football, you know these language barriers) because he believes the Wembley crowd can be too critical.  Firstly he obviously told Terry to keep his mouth shut and let him do the talking, well he does speak better English than Terry but secondly Fabio, maybe the crowd are a little critical after they have raided the piggy bank to just be able to afford the price of the ticket and a disgusting hot dog, when the team plays crap? Just a thought!

Wednesday September 10th

Fabio is proved right when England play away in Zagreb and don’t play crap against Croatia.  Instead they produce their best performance for 7 years and 10 days, since they beat Germany 5 - 1 away in Munch.  So put September 20th, 2015 in your diaries now because whoever England play that day, they’re going to get stuffed.

Little Theo Walcott proves he could be the real deal and that Sven may have had something after all as he totally destroys Croatia almost single handedly with a brilliant hat-trick as England win 4 - 1.  And no, I’m not getting a little ahead of myself, he did look good.  Although to be honest he is so damn quick I may not have been looking at the right player as I couldn’t keep up with him.  A little like the Croatian defence.

Thursday September 11th

Little Zola is named as the new West Ham manager and the debate starts as to whether the guy simply just to nice to be a football manager.  Although if he’s as good at managing as his was at playing, Hammers fans and the rest of us, could be in for something special.

Friday September 12th

No idea what really happened this day, I was simply too knackered trying to absorb everything else that had been going on in the last 12 days.  However, you can bet your life that that poor sod was still stood outside St. James’ Park going “errr” every fews seconds.  He’d been there so long I swear he’d developed a Geordie accent.

Saturday September 13th

Fans of Liverpool and to be fair most of the players and most definitely the manager, finally know not only what it’s like to beat Man Utd but to also actually score one of their own goals against their arch rivals.  No, they didn’t score an own goal, Utd did.  I mean one of their own players scored for their team.  Hadn’t happened in a long time.  Perhaps they had forgotten they were actually allowed to do that?

Later in the day the Oil Firm Derby or The Clash Of The Cash took place at the richest club in the world, as  Man City took on poor old Chelsea.  It’s going to take a while before I can say Man City are the richest club in the world without questioning my own sanity.  Robinho said “Hello” to English football with a wonderful free-kick, at which point all City fans must have thought they’d all died and gone to heaven.  Utd beaten earlier in the day and their new hero just waltzes, (or should that be sambas?), into Eastlands and scores a great goal against the team he thought he was actually signing for.

Oh, and just to add more insult to injury, Newcastle get beaten at home to Hull City. Both Mike Ashley and Denis Wise must have got their dates wrong because neither of them remembered the game was on and didn’t turn up.  Strange!

Sunday September 14th

By now I’m not even sure if this was the right day, but let’s just assume it was…Keegan flies back to the UK from Spain where he had escaped to have more talks with Mike Ashley in London.  I hope Kevin is on Airmiles because that’s basically all that came out of the meeting other than, no there wasn’t going to be another (3rd) Coming of the Messiah!

Mike Ashley releases a rather long statement on the Newcastle Utd website basically saying “please leave me alone, don’t worry I’m off, you’ve won” to all the fans.  Sales of Newcastle Brown treble overnight.

If I’ve missed anything out, just let me know.  I’m off for a lie down, as should that Sky reporter who is no doubt still outside St James’ Park. Why Ay Man give that man a Newkie Brown!

england-under-capello-just-more-of-the-same

I’ve waited a day or so to start writing this article just in case Wednesday night, as I’d hoped, was just in fact a “Dallas - Bobby Ewing in the shower” senario I had of course simply just dreamt the whole sorry nightmare.  Wrong!  I didn’t and it was that much of a nightmare.

I know I shouldn’t judge and criticise, I know I shouldn’t be throwing my hands in the air whilst wailing and gnashing my teeth, but holy ****!    The score of 2 - 2 might sound ok but whatever you do, it you weren’t unlucky enough to be at the game and you haven’t seen any of it yet, don’t bother wasting your time to watch any highlights.  Although I obviously say “highlights” in a kind of post modernist ironic sort of way!

Before I go on, if in deed I can even be bothered to continue writing about it, I found one quote very interested.  It was a quote from Wayne Rooney and after the game, he said and I quote:

“We can beat any team. The fans don’t have to be worried. Everything will be OK.”

Well, that’s all fine and dandy Wayne but I think you’ll find that most people watching on Wednesday evening weren’t too worried about how you and Man Utd are going to get on this season, they were more concerned about England!

Fabio Capello, The England Manager Even more worrying was Capello stating England “played with good football, with good style.”  Really?  Had he accidentally put someone else’s glasses on before the game?  A disillusioned Wayne thinking he’s at Old Trafford is bad enough, but the manager too.  But I’m not, I refuse to say “Come back Steve all is forgiven”.

At least other managers, like Portsmouth’s Harry Redknapp were a little more honest about England’s performance.  Well, I suppose he can be when he isn’t the man in charge but apparently Redknapp said after the game,

“That was one of the worst performances I have seen from an England team.”

Don’t mince words Harry, tell it like it is!  I wonder if he’d have said that if it had been his England team?  Perhaps not but still, he had a very valid point.

It wouldn’t have got any better for Capello and his team yesterday morning as they got up to read some of the morning papers either.  If the game was bad, some of the reports in the press were even more nightmarish!  “Wasters!”  was one headline.  Another, which I admit I did think quite amusing was, “The Wally Without The Brolly.”  It would appear the honeymoon is definitely over Fabio.

Barwick & Capello. The affair is definitely over!

Perhaps a certain Mr. Brian Barwick knows something we don’t and that is why he’s getting out of the FA now whilst the going is still good!  Or maybe he was just fed up of all the 5 star buffet lunches and the expense account.  Barwick has stated that he will vacate his seat at the FA on 31st December.  They probably have to wait a few months to be able to find a crane suitable enough to actually get him out of the seat!

He said, “I am sad to be leaving the FA but I believe it is in the best interests of all parties.”  (Especially in your best interests if Wednesday night is anything to go by).  He continued,

“I have always endeavoured to do my job with passion, decency and integrity…..”  Sorry I can’t go on with that, you get the picture!

Ok, bottom line about Wednesday night, at least it wasn’t a competitive game, it was only a friendly.  But try telling that to all the people who bothered to go to Wembley and pay their money.  Capello only has a few weeks left to sort things out and the try and instil a culture within the players that the team is bigger than the individual.

Thanks for reading, I hoped you enjoyed this more than watching the game.  I did!

does-fabio-capello-read-the-soccer-blog

Look, who’s to say he doesn’t!  He could have been sipping his espresso this morning reading my article about who he was going to pick as England captain and he said to himself, “Si si Rik,Terry is ze best man.  Grazie mille!”

Then again of course, that could be total rubbish and he already knew I was right and that John Terry is of course the best man to lead England into the World Cup Qualifying campaign.

John Terry The New England Captain Under Fabio CapelloOne of the major factors was probably the fact that, apart from Beckham who let’s face it was always a non-starter to regain the captaincy, Terry has the most experience as captain of England out of the touted candidates of himself, Ferdinand and Gerrard, even though he has won less caps overall than the other two.  Terry has won 44 caps, Gerrard 67 and Ferdinand 68.

So Terry will begin his second stint at wearing the armband against the Czech Republic in a Friendly at Wembley tomorrow.

In the press conference this lunchtime he explained he was a little surprised after all the talk in recent days that Ferdinand was going to get the call, he said:

 Powered by Max Banner Ads

“I think everybody realises it means the world to me to retain the armband.

“To get the armband back is a huge achievement for me.

“I heard about an hour before the news conference, just after training. The manager called the whole squad together and told us as a whole.

“For me to get it above the likes of Rio Ferdinand and the other players in the squad is a great honour.”

As a slight consolation for Ferdinand, he was selected by Capello as Vice Captain.

So, the bookies got it completely wrong for once and I’m very glad personally that Fabio didn’t listen to all that rubbish about having to have a complete break from the Steve McClaren era.  If you’ve read my earlier article, the link is above, you’ll know what I think about that ridiculous argument.

Anyway, I’d be very interested to hear what you think of the appointment of John Terry as England Captain.  Do you think Capello has made the right choice or not, or do you even care?  Why not place your vote in the Poll below or to the left of the page (results will appear in the left sidebar).  You can also vote for who you think will win this season’s Premier League Title.  At the time of writing Liverpool were still slightly ahead but after the performance by Chelsea at the weekend, beating Portsmouth 4 - 0, they have starting to climb the table.  Personally if Chelsea don’t win, the team that do will fully deserve it!

who-will-be-capellos-choice-to-lead-england-into-a-new-era

As you will probably know there appear to have always been three main candidates for the England captaincy and the England boss is finally due to announce his decision today.

The three candidates are of course, John Terry of Chelsea, Steven Gerrard of Liverpool and Rio Ferdinand of Manchester Utd.  A pretty impressive lineup!

Now of course this is all personal choice, but if I were the England boss, apart from speaking Italian, I would instantly narrow that list down to two candidates.  I’m not saying at all that the guy I would remove from that list isn’t a great player, he is, but I just don’t see him as the right “figurehead” to lead his country.  The player I would remove is Rio.  No hard feelings, just what my gut tells me.

Rio Ferdinand & John Terry Now I obviously know nothing because whilst enjoying my coffee and watching the news this morning, it would appear that it is solely a two horse race between Terry and Ferdinand, and the odds on favourite to get the nod from Fabio is Rio.  In fact he is a clear favourite according to them.  Bookies aren’t stupid!  Ever see a poor one?

However, as far as I am concerned, where you need your captain is on the pitch and the other two, Terry and Gerrard, can both be truly inspirational. That said, I would find it a truly difficult decision to narrow that down to one.  I certainly don’t envy Capello the job.

But in the cold light of day, I think I would have to agree with former England and Arsenal captain and now assistant to Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth, Tony Adams.  He believes there is only one candidate for the job and that is Terry.

I heard others saying you can’t go for Terry simply because he is a legacy of the McClaren era and England need a total break from that.  Have to say I don’t agree with that one bit.  If that were the case then surely you couldn’t pick anyone to play for England that McClaren had.  That would leave Capello with a few blokes from Hackney Marshes to choose from because, other than them and me, he played just about everybody else!  Plus McClaren has gone, his days are over.  It is possible to just let that relatively short era fade into the distant recesses of your memory.  That’s what I’ve done.  Steve who?

 Powered by Max Banner Ads

Bookies obviously have a funny side to them because I also noticed that they were actually offering odds, I think they were 14/1, that the new England captain would be a bloke called Beckham.  Oh come on, please!  Talk about stealing candy from a baby.  Does anyone in their right mind think Golden Balls is going to be made captain again?  If you place any money on him winning the armband you deserve to loss your money!  Wow, that was a little controversial for me.  I better take a few deep breaths….. Ah, that’s better!

Well, whoever gets the nod today Joe Cole, the Chelsea player, came out with the party line and said all the right things yesterday by stating that the player who gets the job will have the full backing of all his teammates.  It was almost like he was reading an auto cue.

Whether it be Rio, John or Stevie I’m sure all England fans will be hoping this is a brand new era for England and no doubt everyone else will be hoping it isn’t!

Jul 21

That is a question that was asked in a forum I’m a member of.  My original intention was to simply reply with a one word answer but I seem to have got carried away and wrote a little more than that.  So I thought I would post my answer here.  See if you can work out what my one was going to be?

Let’s see shall we?  No player loyalty. Players don’t need to be the best to make huge amounts of money. In fact, they don’t even have to damn well play to make huge sums of money. Inflated egos, bad behaviour and so on and so on ad infinitum…….

But do you know what they worst thing about all this is? How it effects the fans. The normal, everyday fan. When I grew up football was a completely different game and catered to the mainly working class. It was their “release” from the day to day grind and work. (I’m talking about the UK here.)

3pm on a Saturday. That was it. That was when games were played, not any time or day to suit the TV companies, sponsors etc. The average man on the street who had to work hard to just survive could still afford to watch and support his team every Saturday afternoon standing on the terraces singing his heart out. That was how these guys could face the next week at work. I mean you could write a whole “social history” type book on that, and people have.

The huge amounts of money also effects the lower league teams. It even effects the so called “lesser” clubs in each individual league, including the Premiership. There are mini leagues within leagues. No one can truly say that any team outside the “big 4″ has a cat in hell’s chance of winning the title. Some would even argue that it’s only a two horse race each year. Then there are those teams that are always battling it out for UEFA Cup spots. You have another mini league that aren’t quite good enough to make Europe but are probably going to stay clear of a relegation battle and then you have the mini league of teams who are just happy to finish 17th. That is their Championship, survival!

Why does this happen, and not just in England either? It happens because all the money filters to the top due to TV rights and sponsorship deals etc. And because those teams have more money, they can afford the best players and because they can afford the best players they win more games, trophies etc. Therefore they are on TV more. More “fans” jump on board. More merchandise is sold, bigger stadia are built and more people pay ever increasing prices for tickets. And the cycle goes on.

Tickets prices keep going up and the guy who used to be able to support his beloved club every Saturday afternoon at 3pm is forced out in favour of the prawn sandwich corporate brigade to the point where you can be in a stadium in the middle of a game with 50,000 other people and hear a pin drop!

I have stood on terracing when they had to shut the gates at 1pm, 2 hours before kick-off, because the stand was full! A mass of swaying fans singing, chanting and creating a better atmosphere 2 hours before a game than you get in the middle of 95% of games now! You can now go to a game and 10 minutes before kick off the ground is probably half empty. You can stroll to your “seat” with minutes to go.

And even if you do get into the ground early, you have to sit there and listen to some third rate bloody DJ, playing some crap pop record and making dedications to some bloke (probably a fat accoutant) who lives 200+ hundreds miles away and the only reason he is at the game is because he’s on some corporate sponsors freebie day.  He will be sat in a box having a 4 course meal with wine, coffee and mints and will probably never hear his dedication anyway!

I could go on….. There are a few positive sides to the money, but that is a different story….. But, what was the question again? Is money wrecking football? It is a very subjective issue but I’m sure you can make your own conclusions.
