Just following on from the England game, did you watch the Scotland game against Norway? Because if you didn’t you have to watch the brief highlights below. In what was a big game for Scotland, George Burley the Scots manager, made a big call 10 minutes into the second half at Hampden Park. Burley substituted James McFadden amidst boos, and brought on Chris Iwelumo. Then just 10 minutes after his introduction Iwelumo contrived to produce one of the “greatest” misses of all time! It was a tap in from 2 yards out, middle of the goal. Here are those quick highlights for you. You won’t have to wait long for the miss!
See what I mean? Take a look at the picture below, the expression on his face says it all really.
So the question has to be, would James McFadden have scored from that tap in? Er, yes, I think is the correct answer. Would the other substitute Kris Boyd who stayed firmly rooted to the bench, have scored from that tap in? Yes again! Would you have scored? Yes, I reckon so. Would your Mother have been able to slot that in from all of 2 yards? Probably! You don’t really get more of a nightmare start to your international career than missing a chance like that, do you? Poor sod! And it’s not as if he didn’t have to wait for it too, the guy is 30! I wonder if he’ll make 2 caps for Scotland? After the game he said, “I’m gutted. I put my foot out and it hit my heel. I had a big chance and I should have it away so I’m disappointed but it’s gone and I’ve just go to move on.”
It would be a great shame it that miss comes back to haunt Burley and Scotland. But unfortunately it may just prove to be the defining moment in Scotland’s World Cup campaign and as a result prove to also be the defining moment of George Burley’s reign as the Scotland manager. Of course it will also probably prove to be the defining moment of Chris Iwelumo’s international career.
Let’s hope not on all three counts!
Cheers
