Did you know? It’s Diego Maradonna’s birthday today. (He’s 48, years not stones!)

It was probably be one of Maradonna’s happier birthdays of recent years after it was announced he was to become the national coach of the Argentine team. Now is it just me, or has this got potential disaster written all over it? Maradonna does seem to have a knack, how can I put this politely? of turning everything he does into a train wreck.

Here’s Maradonna in his pomp, playing for Argentina. And there is no denying he was one of those very very special players. But since probably the defeat in the 1990 World Cup Final to Germany in Italy, Maradonna’s life has generally been on a very steep downward spiral.

See what I mean by the photo on the right.  Not looking too good there is he!  So becoming the Argentine coach will be something of a remarkable comeback for this, still very popular figure who, as we can plainly see, has suffered from obesity and cocaine addiction.

Of course for all English fans, he will always be remembered for the “Hand of God” goal he scored in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final in Mexico.  Oh, and that other goal in the same game.  Perhaps the greatest individual goal ever scored?

Maradonna is also a grandfather and has had his own TV show in Argentina for some time.  If he does become the Argentine coach, I wish him well, but I can’t help thinking it’s a bit of a strange decision and one that has a self-destruct button very close.

Cheers

Rik
