Avram Grant, the Chelsea manager, known as “Lucky” to his friends no doubt, has had his contract termininated by the West London club.

“Contract terminated”. I read that in one report, forget where now, but please all that means is the poor guy was sacked, shown the door, “Your fired!”

OK, he might not be the most charismatic guy around but you’ve got to feel a little sorry for him, haven’t you? I don’t know about you, but I think the man did a pretty good job in some very difficult circumstances. It can’t have been easy taking over from Jose “The Special One” Mourinho back in September. A pretty hard act to follow if you ask me. I’m not 100% certain of this, haven’t checked, but I’m pretty sure Mourinho will have been Chelsea’s most successful manager ever.

Despite losing his first game in charge, ironically against Man Utd, Grant took them to within minutes of the league title, got to the Final of the League Cup, only to be beaten by London rivals Spurs and then but for a slip by John Terry, could have won the European Cup, the biggest prize in club football. Are Chelsea saying, if we read between the lines, that had Terry not slipped and he had gone on to lift the trophy a few minutes later, Grant would still be in a job and all rose at Stamford Bridge? A little harsh, isn’t it.

In the clod light of day, I suppose Grant’s position had been the subject of constant speculation all season. It didn’t matter how many games he won, the press constantly wrote about it. He was always seen as a temporary replacement maninly due I suppose to his lack of topflight experience, but I bet he never thought like that even though the rumors continued after he guided the club to second place in the Premier League. The poor guy even received death threats at one point in the season!

I’m sure there will be some Chelsea fans who will be glad to see the back of Grant and now the speculation will automatically shift from Grant himself to which poor sod will take over from him. If you were a football manager, would you want the job? You would have to negotiate yourself a damn good contract because unless you win the Premiership and the Champions League, chances are you are only going to suffer the same fate as Jose and Avram.

So, who’s your money on? Sven perhaps? Rijkaard has also been mentioned, as has Brian Laudrup and Roberto Mancini. Well, I have no idea who will be the lucky candidate but all I’ll say is, “good luck!” to him. He’s going to need it with Roman as his boss. He’s starting to make Alan Sugar (or if you’re in the States, Donald Trump) look like a positve pushover as a boss.
