Spurs End Liverpool’s Unbeaten Record

On a dark and very wet autumn evening in North London Tottenham rode their luck and Liverpool’s ran out as Spurs cut short the Reds unbeaten start to the league season. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, their North London rivals, Arsenal, were potentially kissing their title hopes good-bye after they succumbed to the lethal weapon that is Rory Delap’s amazingly long throw-ins.

Harry Redknapp’s dream start to life at White Hart Lane shows no sign of coming to an end as a 90th-minute winner from Roman Pavlyuchenko lifted Spurs off the foot of the table and knocked Liverpool off the summit. Chelsea leap-frogged back over them.

Manchester United’s home win against Hull was expected, but a seven-goal thriller with the brave Tigers fighting back from 4-1 down to be edged out 4-3 was certainly not. For one moment I thought we were going to get another classic 4 - 4 draw but Hull showed great character. Better than Hull would have throw the towel in at 4 -1, but Phil Brown’s team certainly have a big heart and this result, even in defeat, should give them more confidence.

Chelsea moved up to the Premier League summit as they thrashed sorry Sunderland 5-0 at Stamford Bridge with Nicolas Anelka helping himself to a hat-trick. Sunderland were simply awful and it should have been more than 5 - 0 really.

Wigan snatched a last-gasp winner to ruin Tony Adams’ home bow as Portsmouth manager. Not a great start for the ex Arsenal captain in his new job but I’m sure he’ll bounce back. Meanwhile 10-man Blackburn grabbed a late equaliser at West Brom. Paul Ince wasn’t too happy with the sending off of Benni McCarthy and certainly wasn’t showing too much respect for the match officials!

Everton won for the first time on home soil this season, which is a little hard to believe when you consider we are already in November) as Louis Saha’s late effort was enough to overcome Fulham and finally Mido was on target as Middlesbrough drew at home to West Ham.
