Zola The New West Ham Manager

Posted by The Soccer Blogger as English Premiership

Obviously I’ve never met the bloke but doesn’t Gianfranco Zola just come across as being one of the nicest guys around?  And not only that, what a player he was!  He’s got to be right up there as one of the best foreign imports into the English game there has been.

Zola has agreed a 3 year deal to take over from Alan Curbishley as the new Manager at Upton Park.  I certainly hope he has sorted out all the problems that made Curbishley leave.  When his name was first mentioned a few days ago, I will admit it totally took me by surprise.  I didn’t even realised he was involved in managing or coaching.  But apparently he has been looking after the Italian Under 21 squad (at least I think that’s right).

Also in the frame were his countryman, Roberto Donadoni, the former AC Milan midfielder and recent Italian coach and John Collins, formerly of Celtic, Fulham, Monaco (and probably a few other teams as well!).

Anyway, I have to say, I’m really glad Zola got the job and he’s back involved in the Premier League again.(At only 42, he’s still probably better than a lot of the players out there!).  Plus I really really hope the West Ham board don’t mess him around and just let him get on with doing his job.  If he can get his players to produce the type of football he did, the West Ham faithfull are in for a treat!

You’ve got to think he will have the respect of his players.  Not only because he seems like such a nice bloke but because they know how good he was.  I’ll also say that I hope the fact he is such a nice bloke, isn’t his downfall.  I mean he hardly comes across as having that ruthless, throw teacups around the dressing room type of mentality the you probably sometimes need as a top class manager.  Let’s hope I’m wrong because I wish him all the best at the job that lies ahead of him, because it’s not going to be easy.

you are certainly right, Zola does seem like a genuinely decent guy….I’m just not so sure that is what gets you to the highest level in management

we will see i suppose!

Hi Freddy
Thanks for dropping by, good to hear from you.
Yes, that is the one worry you would have.
His main worry though will probably be tryig to fix that defence at West Ham, especially after conceeding 3 to West Brom at the weekend!
Cheers
Rik
