Top 3 Soccer Players in 2009
Posted by curtis as International Leagues
This has been a great year for soccer. We have seen some great games, some tremdendous goals, and and some unexpected outcomes. Some of the same world-class stars dominated the scene, while a few others emerged out of the shadows. It is difficult to rank players of such different playing styles and abilities, but I have been able to identify 3 that shined the brightest. These rankings are based on opinion, and I welcome you to vote in the poll and leave comments in the section below. Enjoy!
Lionel Messi
Messi has been consistently been referred to as the next Maradonna and recently he has been living up to the reputation. He inherited Ronaldhino’s #10 for Barcelona, where he has been playing great. He brings a level of excitement to the beautiful game, that others cannot. He’s small, fast, and has amazing ball skills that consistently leave defenders stunned. He was the top scorer in the Champions league and was also awarded the “UEFA Club Forward of the Year” and the “UEFA Club Footballer of the Year”. These spectacular accomplishments only add to his young, but extensive soccer resume. This year Messi demonstrated his ability to be consistently brilliant, and for this reason I found him to be among the top 3 soccer players in 2009.
Christiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo is well established as one of the best players in the world. This year he was titled the “FIFA World Player of the Year”, an accomplishment that is limited to only the most elite of players. He also reached and surpassed 100 match appearances with Manchester United during the 2009 season, even though he was battling through an ankle injury. For the 2009-10 season he will be transferring to Real Madrid, where he will continue his career with a new group of world class players. He is one of the most influential soccer players in the world and is deserving of a spot in the top 3.
Steven Gerrard
Gerrard is the life behind Liverpool and has appeared in over 100 club matches for the successful team. In May he received the “2009 Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year” award, beating out Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney. The award was well deserved. He may be the most balanced player in the world, being able to contribute on both sides of the field. He can shoot, pass, dribble, defend, and score unlike anyone else. He doesn’t have the flair that often earns more flamboyant players attention, but he still deserves a place in the top 3.
