I seem to remember writing a few days ago that Arsenal and Arsene Wenger had had a bad few days. Well, it isn’t every week you are beaten in a major show piece final, your players fight on the pitch, get banned and fined and then you get knocked out of the FA Cup too, is it? I mean that is pretty bad.

Well all that would have been consigned to the memory banks and put down to experience had it not been for the third and final nail in the coffin, that was hammered in by PSV last night. Arsenal have just endured what must be one of the worst 11 days of Arsene Wenger’s reign at Highbury / The Emirates, as their last hope of any form of silverware evaporated last night in north London as PSV scored the away goal the Wenger so craved himself two weeks ago. Can you imagine if they don’t secure at least 4th position in the Premiership by the end of the season. I’m sure they will, but just to make matters a little harder, Thierry Henry is going to be out for 3 weeks! Not too many silver lined clouds floating above the Emirates at the moment!

Wenger tried to put a brave face on it saying, “There are a lot of positives [really?] but the two weeks have been horrendous.

“We can only think we played the game we wanted to play but we didn’t take our chances. It’s cruel.

“I don’t feel we failed in the Carling Cup. We’re out of the FA Cup and that was a big disappointment, but it is minor compared to this.

“Now we have to secure a place in the Champions League because we have a responsibility to finish as high as we can and try to overtake Liverpool.

“We lacked a bit of sharpness and of course we lacked a bit of quality in the final third.”

Do you know what really must have added insult to injury for poor old Arsenal? The player who scored that oh so crucial away goal was the defender Alex. What’s for cruel about that I hear you cry? Well, Alex just happens to be a Chelsea player on loan at PSV! And it was quite a night for Alex because before he scored that goal, he actually scored for Arsenal too with an own goal.
