Any reason why i struggle with soccer fitness?
Posted by The Soccer Blogger as Soccer Training & Skills
Hi,
Im 20 years old and about to start preseason for soccer in a couple weeks, i have been training for the last month in the gym doing weight training and i have been doing alot of running at the track. I have been doing mainly interval type running/sprints and 5km runs, i think im happy with the interval running BUT what im missing is the long distance side. Alot of guys in the team can run 5km in 18 - 20 mins and then i do it in 21 - 22mins. and i assume they havnt been training for the last month like i have. Even 3.8km most do it in 14 - 15 mins and i get 16 - 17mins. Also the Beep Test, ill get around level 12.4 and most of them hit Level 13 or Higher. I am pretty quick but I really wanna get super fit this season because its the key to having a good season. I want to be fit by the time preseason starts.
Is there any reason why i struggle with longer distance?
and if there is any tips on what training i can do to get REALLY fit?
If your having trouble with stamina, when you go for runs, run as long as you can without stopping. If you can, go to a high altitude area to exercise or something. Do some breathing excersizes before you run you 5k. Breathe in through you nose and exhale all the CO2 out of your lungs.
For speed, get some ankle weights. The longer you keep them on, the faster you feel when you take them off. Even if your not excersizing you can leave them on.

do sum long distance running in the morning to get urself fitter. this will enable u to enhance your endurance and also keep your speed up. this will help especially if u are a full- back or a winger. Also do some knee raising and fitness drills. Try to make your heels touch ur butts while you run. This will make ur thigh muscles stronger and increase ur stamina. also raise your knees as close to the chest as possible while running. in soccer, u mostly need start acceleration. try to make your strides longer and do push-ups. according to u, it takes you jus 1-2 mins more than ur team-mates so thats not much of a problem. if u are generally feelin fit, then its quite ok!!! just relax and do the things i avised you to do, and probably ur speed will increase. Rather than focusing too much on long distance runs, try to accelerate as quickly as possible…
