does anyone have any soccer drills to help dribbling?

I’m on a soccer team at my school and I really need to work on getting around people on the field.

there are a few different basics you can apply to dribbling to improve it for yourself.

firstly, when your dribbling, don’t look at the ball or at an opponent, but in between, that way you are aware of both. if you look at either one for too long you lose awareness of the other which in turn means someone will tackle you before you can react or you’ll just trip over the ball or something respectively.

if your having trouble with dribbling just in itself, then dribbling in and out of cones or hats or something in your backyard is a good way to practise your coordination and ease of movement.

its obviously harder on game day with real opposition. the most important thing to remember is balance. trying to get an opponent off balance is the best way to get round them. you don’t even need to do a step over or anything like cristiano ronaldo does, just sort of moving your torso one way implies that your going that way, and can be enough to get your opponent on the back foot.

also, never ever stop with the ball. when the ball comes to you, when you trap it, move it in any direction, it doesn’t need to be towards your goal, this gets you on the move and ready to do something with the ball.

similarly, when your coming up to an opponent, dont slow down too much, beating someone with pace is the easiest way to go. simply continue at a good pace, move your upper body slightly to one side so it looks like your going that way then go the other, and the opponent will not be able to react. if you do the same thing once you’ve slowed down, much less chance of working.

once you start to get the hang of how easy it is to actually beat someone just with balance, you really will get a lot more confidence on the field.

so always remember,
1.practise at home in and out of cones,
2. in the game when you get the ball don’t stop with it.
3. in the game when approaching an opponent don’t try to slow down to beat them, pace is the most important factor, a slight fake to one side with your body and you’ve got most players beat =]

thats dribbling covered, but ill also go into a bit of other general tips.

the way to win games, is this, control - look up - release
i really cannot stress how effective it is when everyone in your team simply controls the ball, looks up for another player, easy pass.

noone needs to be sprinting. the people without the ball should simply jog into a space and call for the ball. the player about to recieve the ball, just needs to control it, look up, release it to another player. doesnt even need to be a killer ball from defense to attack. just an easy pass. it strings teams apart.

another good tip is when your on one side of the field with the ball and its getting crowded, look for a switch to one of your players on the other side. this can open up the game and you can have good chances of scoring with counter attacks.

when you’re not dribling then you need to use tactics: vision of game
quick pass
(like Andrea Pirlo or Gilardino- no dribling but great pass http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=g7_2qI-VQYM&feature=related)

a simple drill is to line up small cones in a straight line with just less than a metre between them. with the ball at your feet move between the cones. start moving slowly and gradually get faster as you get better. you can vary this drill by using only one foot to move the ball. then use the other. or only use the outside of your feet. there are many more variations of dribbling that you can practice with the cones. you could try moving backwards whilst dragging the ball with you. just use your imagination.
you can also move the cones around to make different drills. bring them closer together to make the drills harder. the possibilities are endless!!!
just make sure you use both your feet, not just your strongest foot. this way you will develop much more control over the ball.
