Obviously not wanting to see Gary Neville to take all the headlines today, Sir Alex chipped in with his own two pennies worth to claim that the FA’s Academy System is failing apart. Must be something in the Cheshire water at the moment perhaps.

Responding to an accusation that some club managers are not fielding enough home grown talent which is apparently harming the national side’s performances, he stated, “The problem is the system. Something must be done because it is in danger of falling apart.

“There are countless flaws. Some are not even being run properly now because clubs are just not able to afford it.”

Mind you, at the end of the day what does he care about the national team’s performance? For a start he’s the manager of Manchester United and does what he thinks is best for his club, quite rightly too and secondly, just in case you had noticed, he’s Scottish! Can’t think of many Scots that would go out of their way to help the England team.

They may not be enough home grown talent playing in England but your really can’t have your cake and eat it, as the saying goes. The reason there are more foreign players in the English league these days is that there is a lot more money in the game through sponsorship deals, TV deals etc. which the FA are partly responsible for. Also, perhaps they could consider that the lack of England’s success of the pitch for the last, what 41 years, may have something to do with a lack of world class talent actually on the pitch and in the dug-out.

Just a thought!
